Since our Apple Cobbler turned out so great, we thought we’d make another cobbler with a different shortcut, using a Cake Mix!
Cake Mix Desserts
This Peach Cobbler with cake mix is so easy! Using Cake Mix as a shortcut in your recipe is SUPER AWESOME. From cookies like Snickerdoodles and Red Velvet to other desserts like this Apple Pie Cake or Ooey Gooey Butter Cake, using a cake mix as your base lets you go in any direction your recipe takes you!
I simply can’t stress how easy it will be to make this peach cobbler with your new best friend: cake mix!
Peach Cobbler with Cake Mix
Peach Cobbler, also sometimes called a Peach Dump Cake consists of a fruit layer that is baked in a casserole dish with a pastry or crust topping. Often times, cobblers and dump cakes get intertwined. I did a little research as to what exactly the different was, but it appears there isn’t much of any.
According to this site: It looks like a Dump Cake is covered with more of a “crust” while a Cobbler is topped with a biscuit, batter or dumpling. Well, whatever you want to call it, are you ready to get started? Here is what you’ll need:
- 3 cans, 15.25 oz each, sliced peaches in syrup
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon (or to taste)
- 1 package, 15.25 oz, yellow cake mix
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 stick, 1/2 cup butter, cold
- vanilla ice cream or whipped topping for serving
Peach Cobbler with Cake Mix Notes:
- We love to use this baking pan because it comes with a lid! This way, you can just keep the leftovers fresh right in your baking pan! No more trying to cover it up with messy aluminum foil. Yay!
- I have seen versions of this recipe where people sprinkle some nuts on top at the end before going in the oven. Almonds, pecans, walnuts, pistachios… anything would roast nicely in the oven.
- I’ve seen different methods for incorporating the butter into this dish. We opted to slice ours up and place them around the dish. *THERE HAVE BEEN SOME COMMENTS THAT THIS METHOD RESULTS IN DRY CAKE MIX STILL ON TOP AFTER BAKING* This hasn’t happened to us, but obviously it’s sometimes happening. You could also melt the butter and drizzle it evenly over the recipe. Or, I’ve seen people melt the butter and mix it in with their cake mix. This gives you a sort of “crumble” and people seem to like how it bakes. Mixing the butter in with the cake mix is your best bet to not have dry cake mix visible after baking.
- This should go without saying, but we highly advise serving this warm with a dollop of fresh whipped cream and/or vanilla ice cream on top. But.. .we didn’t need to tell you that, right?

Peach Cobbler with Cake Mix
Ingredients
- 3 cans 15.25 oz each, sliced peaches in syrup
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon or to taste.
- 1 package 15.25 oz, yellow cake mix
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 stick 1/2 cup butter, cold
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 and grease a 9x13 baking pan.
- Pour 2 cans of peaches into the prepared pan. Drain the third can and pour just the peaches into the pan. I've had some questions on this so: To be clear, you need 3 cans of peaches total. Two of cans, pour in the pan WITH the juice. The third can, DRAIN the juice and then pour it in with the other peaches. This results in the amount of juice we like in the dish. If you want to add or subtract juice, you are welcome to try draining another can or not draining any cans at all. But you'll need 3 cans total for sure.
- Sprinkle peaches with ground cinnamon.
- Top with cake mix and spread evenly on the top. Or, mix with melted butter and brown sugar before adding to the top. See the notes section above for more info on this.
- Break apart the packed brown sugar and sprinkle on the cake.
- Slice butter into 1/8" slices and add on top of the pan.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes and remove from oven. Cool until warm and serve with whipped topping or vanilla ice cream.

Use the recipe. You just need some sort of juice to go with the peaches. I would macerate the peaches with some white and brown sugar, corn starch, and a small amount of liquid. Maybe blend up some peaches and mix in with the rest. Then follow recipe.

I used fresh peaches tweaking the cake mix. I added butter & 1/2 cup of water, put the mixture on top of the peaches & sprinkled a little brown sugar on top. The water replaces the peach syrup. Turned out very yummy.

Just tried this recipe and the filling was super watery after it was cooked! I don’t know why as I used peaches in syrup and followed the exact recipe. I’ve never had any cobbler go watery on me before so I’m shocked! Definitely looks nothing like the picture you posted. The crust was just floating on top of a pan of water and peached basically.

Hmmm… we’ve had a ton of comments on this recipe but that hasn’t happened to anyone. You say “watery”.. did you actually put water in it? Or do you mean “syrupy”. If it was too syrupy, did you maybe use the syrup from all 3 cans of peaches? We instruct to drain the third can… I’m sorry. That is the only thing I think it could be.

Same thing happened to me after 45 mins of cooking time. Was still very jiggly and, for lack of a better word, runny. Nothing was floating though. I just left it in the oven a little longer until it firmed up.

You need 3 total cans, which is why that is listed in ingredients. Two of the cans, you’ll want the juice with the peaches. The 3rd can, you drain the juice and then add them. I’m not sure how or why that is confusing, but I’ll clarify it a little more in the recipe card. 🙂

I love this dessert. I have been making a similar version for years. When I use peaches I add some nutmeg too, just because I like it. I am going to make this version this weekend to try it because I have never added brown sugar. I’m a bit concerned with the level of sweetness in adding it as I find it’s really sweet with just the cake mix.
I also make it using 2 cans of tart cherries in juice and leave out the cinnamon.

Tried it and yes it is easy BUT mine came out with sections of dry cake mix batter on top still powdery dry when the cooking time was done. 🧐. So the “pretty” presentation was not so grand when I had to “mix” in the batter AFTER it came out of the oven. Followed the directions to a “T” so don’t know what happened. I made this for Christmas dessert and mine was really good tasting and I sprinkled crushed pecans only on half BUT I too also noticed white powdery dry cake mix in random areas on top. Also the half w/o pecan sprinkled on top was very watery on bottom. I too followed directions precisely as worded to a T. Using a 9×13 pan as directed. If you happen to figure out the white powder issue please inform us how to fix it.

I don’t know whether I did it right or not, but I wasn’t sure whether the cake mix should be prepared like making a cake and poring it on top of the peaches. I sprinkled the cake mix on top and then the brown sugar. The cake mix under the crusty top portion was dried cake mixed. Not cooked. I even left it in the oven 10 minutes longer. Just pour the dry mix evenly on top. Then top with brown sugar and then butter. We just sliced up our butter and placed it around the top so when it bakes, it melts and mixes in. It’ so easy! Hope that answers your question!

Reading the comments above about some dry parts of the cake mix still being present after baking, I used a trick I learned from another dump cake recipe. I know this makes it technically not a “dump cake” but, I carefully mixed all the peaches, with the two cans of juice, cinnamon, and the cake mix in a large bowl so all ingredients are well-mixed/incorporated. Then I poured it into the greased baking pan, added the brown sugar, and the butter and baked, as the recipe directs. It came out perfectly golden brown and the peaches still were mostly on the bottom and yes, still super yummy! No dry spots of cake mix left at all!

You could try it. But an important part of the recipe is that syrup that comes in the canned peaches. So, I’m assuming if you used fresh peaches, it wouldn’t be quite as sweet?

I had the little cups of diced peaches and used 4 of them. Only problem I didn’t remove enough of the juices so was very liquidy? Is that a word? Also it was light fruit juice not syrup and other than too much liquid was really good. It did thicken up some so all was not lost. Here’s a thought about dry cake mix after it’s baked maybe there was not enough juice to wet the cake mix enough or not enough butter? One other thing with the brown sugar I cut it in half was very sweet although my daughter who is a sugar-holic liked it. I have orders from headquarters to make it every week now so i’ll be trying pears and pineapple too. I love easy recipes! Thanks!

The juice of the canned peaches is part of this recipe. So, maybe use a two cans of peaches (and the juice) and then the third can you can sub for the fresh peaches?

Excellent recipe! I’ve been making cobblers and crisps from scratch for years and happened upon your recipe……..why was I killing myself?!?!?! The only mistake I made was that I bought 2 LARGE cans of peaches in syrup rather than 3 small….what was I thinking? Need to put cake mix in first before the cimmon and stir the cake mix into the juice of the peaches, cause I didn’t stir the mix, followed the instructions, baked it about 40 minutes and took it out of the oven, but the cake mix was still in lumps not cooked. So after the peaches are poured into the pan it may be a good idea to stir the cake mix into the juice, then add the rest of the ingredients.

Much to sweet with half cup of brown sugar. Reduce it to 1/4 c. or eliminate all together especially if using can peaches in heavy syrup. A teaspoon of lemon juice mixed with peaches really sends this to another level
and is delicious.

I just halved this recipe and it turned out great. I only had 2 8-oz cans of oeaches and one fresh peach. So I used what I had, added cinnamon/sugar blend and half of the remaining ingredients in an 8×8 pan.

I made this this evening and my house smells great and the cobbler is lovely. I did, after reading the comments, mix all the ingredients in a bowl and poured them in my greased pan. My tweaks were :
1. A sugar free cake mix
2. I did not use the brown sugar as I only had heavy syrup peaches and wanted to calm down the sweetness
3.I used extra cinnamon and the last one
4. I learned a long time ago that cake mixes taste wonderful with almond extract so I added 1 teaspoon . I loved the taste and I shared it with my neighbors and they said it smelled great. I will get a review from them tomorrow. All in all this was a win-win..

2 tablespoons of cornstarch will help to thicken your syrup also so it isn’t as loose. I also added 1/4tsp nutmeg,1/4tsp ginger,a 1/2tsp of ground cloves,and a 1/2tsp of vanilla extract mixed well into the peaches and syrup. It was amazing!

I didn’t prepare the cake mix itself before putting it over top of the layer of peaches. So after I “baked” it some of the cake mix was still white/powdery on the top. Should I have prepared the cake mix like I was going to bake a cake then poured it over the peaches?

It’s a good question. There are three competing ways to make this: 1. do like you say and combine the cake mix with the butter before putting it on top. 2. put the powder on top and put evenly spaced pats of butter all around that will melt as it bakes. 3. put the powder on top and melt the butter and drizzle it around. I’ve tried all 3 and they all have slightly different results. Yes, if you mix the melted butter and cake mix together before putting it on top, you will be sure to not have any powder. But it’s a softer, more cakey result. I like having the butter melt while baking. It gives the top a more golden, crispy result. Yeah, sometimes, I’ve had some powder left over. But I’m willing to risk it. And it doesn’t ruin the dish.

Hey gurl. made this recipe! It was delicious! There are only 2 people in my house so I stupidly cut the peaches to 2 cans. lol. Funny, the peaches got lost in all of the other ingredients, but I have to tell you that the flavors were there. My picky grandson gobbled it up and it was gone in 2 days. Boo-hoo I didn’t get much of it before it was gone. 🤣 Making It again tonight and I will hide some for me.😉

I absolutely love this! It’s easy to make. For people who don’t like or do a lot of sugar I suggest to omit it or use half the amount.. I used a bag and a half of frozen peaches in puree. Each bag has 32 ozs. It did not come out runny. I also put my oven on 400° it’s not a convection oven.

I am cooking it now! I melted the butter and mixed it in with the cake mix and the brown sugar. Used two 8×8 pans. Put one can in ear pan and added cake frozen peaches on top. then the mix. We will see how it turns out! Smells great cooking!

We did it again I added brown sugar cinnamon and vanilla to the peaches

I’ve made this for years!! I use a butter pecan cake mix, melted stick of butter on top. I also take a fork to loosen up the peaches and let some of the dry cake mix fall into the syrup. I also add chopped pecans and cinnamon on top. 🙂
