Beef Lo Mein Instructions
- LO MEIN EGG NOODLES – These are found in the Asian Aisle of your grocery store.
- STIR FRY BEEF – We bought Stir Fry Beef at the store that was already sliced up thinly. It was round steak. You can slice up any cut of leaner beef for this recipe. A lot of people use flank steak.
- GARLIC – Minced. We highly recommend using fresh garlic instead of the stuff that comes in the jar (Jarlick!). But we won’t judge.
- SAUCE RECIPE – Sesame Oil, Soy Sauce, Brown Sugar and Ground Ginger.
- SRIRACHA SAUCE – Optional. If you want to add a little heat (we do!).
- VEGETABLES – We use a 16 oz package of frozen stir fry veggies. This consists of broccoli, carrots, onions, red bell peppers, baby corn, mushrooms and water chestnuts. But you can use fresh vegetables if you’d like. They may take a little longer to cook. Adding Snow Peas would also be a great idea.
Beef Lo Mein Recipe
The recipe is so easy! Just follow these steps for a family dinner even better (and cheaper!) than Chinese Takeout!
- Cook lo mein noodles according to package directions and keep warm.
- In a large skillet, combine beef, garlic and 2 tablespoons sesame oil. Heat over medium heat, stirring frequently until beef is fully cooked and no longer pink.
- Add soy sauce, remaining 1 tablespoon oil and ginger and sriracha sauce if using.
- Stir in Brown Sugar until combined.
- Stir in vegetables and continue to heat until no longer frozen, about 10 minutes.
- Add Lo Mein noodles, toss and mix well, continuing to heat through for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and serve immediately.
Storage, Reheating and Freezing
Store leftovers in an airtight container in your refrigerator. They should be good in your fridge for about 4 days. You can reheat on the stove top or the microwave. Splash some water on the noodles if needed to rehydrate them. To freeze, let the dish cool completely and put in a freezer safe container or freezer bag. It will be good in your freezer for about 3-4 months. Thaw out overnight in your refrigerator.
Notes, Tips and FAQs
- CAN I MAKE LO MEIN WITHOUT LO MEIN NOODLES? – If you can’t get your hands on some Lo Mein Noodles, don’t worry! Although this dish won’t technically be Beef Lo Mein anymore, plain old spaghetti noodles will work just fine.
- USE A WOK – We used a cast iron skillet but using a Wok would give you an even more authentic experience.
- TOPPINGS – Top your Lo Mein with Green Onions (scallions), Wontons, Sesame Seeds, Nuts, Sriracha Sauce or Bean Sprouts.
- WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LO MEIN AND CHOW MEIN – Lo Mein indicates that noodles are tossed into the dish whereas Chow Mein Recipes usually have the noodles fried in oil until crispy before being added to the dish.
- CAN YOU USE GROUND BEEF FOR BEEF LO MEIN? – Yes. The dish will taste a little different but it will still be delicious. I’d just try to use a leaner ground beef and make sure you drain the grease after browning it and before you add any more ingredients.
