This Hamburger Hotdish is the ultimate Comfort Food Recipe hailing from the upper Midwest. Loaded with ground beef, onions, garlic, egg noodles and a creamy sauce, it’s perfect for a cold winter day. Or, if you just need an easy family dinner!
What Is A Hotdish?
We’ve always known this recipe as a Hamburger “hotdish”. What exactly is a hotdish? How is it different than any other casserole? The best answer I could find is: well, it isn’t really any different. For the most part, a Hotdish is just another word for a casserole in in the Upper Midwest. I’m certain, at some point, there was a specific recipe that specified what goes into this dish (and I’m sure someone will put something in the comments educating me!). But, what I love about comfort food recipes like this, is that they get handed down through the generations and evolve.
But, basically, a hot dish has some sort of starch, some sort of sauce and some sort of protein. Here is our version and we think it’s pretty darned good.
Hamburger Hotdish
While some people put rice or potatoes into their hotdish, it seems the most traditional versions have egg noodles. So that is what we are going to stick with here. We love egg noodles in a casserole, you just can’t go wrong!
Here are the the ingredients that you’ll need to get started. For step-by-step instructions, check out the printable recipe card below.
- 8 ounces egg noodles, cooked
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 10.5 ounce can cream of mushroom soup
- 1 10.5 ounce can cream of chicken soup
- 1 4 ounce can sliced mushrooms
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- Salt and pepper to taste
Hamburger Hotdish Storage and Freezing
Store leftovers in an airtight container in your refrigerator. They should be good for up to 5 days. This dish reheats just fine in a microwave.
I would not freeze Hamburger Hotdish. These creamier casseroles may break apart when they are reheated.
Other Notes, Tips and Variations
- CHANGE THE SOUP – Really, any “cream of” soup will work in this dish. So, if you have something on hand, or can’t find the soups we listed, feel free to substitute.
- DO YOU NEED TO USE EGG NOODLES? – You do not, you can substitute for any pasta you’d like. Some people like bow tie pasta, some like Penne and a lot of people use elbow macaroni.
- ONE DISH MEAL? – If you have a very large skillet that is oven friendly, you can just load everything in there on the stovetop and then put it all in the oven. Less dishes!
- ADD HEAT – Throw in some sliced jalapenos for to add a little spice to this dish. Or just some green chilis for more subtle kick.
- ADD CHEESE – Sprinkle some shredded cheese on top of the breadcrumbs. Cheddar Cheese would be perfect
- ADD A VEGETABLE – Some versions of this dish add bell peppers, corn (creamed corn instead of one of the soups), celery, carrots, peas or any other vegetable you think would be delicious.
We hope you enjoy this Hamburger Hotdish Recipe! It’s a classic family dinner that can be made any night of the week. And leftovers are just as good for lunch the next day!
