These soft Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes with Buttercream Frosting are the perfect dessert for the Fall Season. Great for pitch-ins, potlucks or an alternative Thanksgiving Dessert, they are quick and easy to make.
Why You Will Love Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes
- FULL OF FALL FLAVOR – Nothing says Fall like the wholesome taste of apples, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar. All these flavors are combined in a delicious, moist cupcake that you won’t be able to put down.
- EASY RECIPE – Full of simple, easy ingredients, this recipe is great for beginners or to let the kids help out with.
Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes
These apple cupcakes have a nice hint of cinnamon mixed into the batter so that neither flavor is overpowering and not too much sweetness. The apple, mixed with the sour cream makes these cupcakes super moist and the buttercream frosting has a little more cinnamon mixed into it for a perfect treat full of Fall flavor! It reminds me of apple pie with some frosting on it. Now THAT sounds delicious!

Do You Have To Use Buttercream Frosting?
Well, we absolutely love the cinnamon buttercream frosting here and have no idea why you’d ever sub it out. But, yes, Cinnamon-Cream Cheese Frosting would also taste pretty yummy on these apple cinnamon cupcakes. If your the type that really doesn’t like a lot of frosting on their cupcakes, you could also go with a simple sugar icing on top and maybe sprinkle some cinnamon sugar on top!
Can You Double This Recipe?
Yes! This recipe yields 12 cupcakes. If you need to make more, you can certainly double the ingredients. Or, you could also make these into mini cupcakes. This would be a great option if there are more people to feed or if you don’t like committing to a “whole” cupcake!
Storage, Leftovers and Freezing
Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature. They should be good for about 5 days.
You can freeze these cupcakes. Although I would NOT put the buttercream frosting on until you are ready to serve. To freeze, just allow to cool fully, wrap in a freezer bag or freezer wrap (or both). To thaw, simple leave at room temperature overnight.
Notes, Tips, Variations and FAQs
- HOW DO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU CUPCAKES ARE DONE?– Insert a toothpick into the center of the cupcake and it should come out clean.
- OTHER TOPPINGS ON YOUR FROSTING?– I already mentioned sprinkling some cinnamon over them. Any sort of nuts would be delicious. Like shaved almonds or chopped pecans and walnuts. Or you could drizzle some caramel over them as well.
- CAN YOU SUBSTITUTE APPLES WITH APPLESAUCE?– We haven’t tried this. There are plenty of cupcake recipes out there that use applesauce. This will change the oil/butter or yogurt you’d need in this recipe and we haven’t tested it. Please let us know if you try it and how it turns out.
- DO YOU HAVE TO USE MUFFIN LINERS?- We really recommend that you do. But if you don’t have any, ust spray a clean cupcake or muffin baking tray with nonstick cooking spray. Or, you can use butter as well. But we like to use the paper liners because they are easier to serve. And you can get cool Fall and Thanksgiving Cupcake Liners that are so much fun!
I hope you enjoy this great dessert for the holidays this year. I’d love for you to try it out and let me know how you liked it in the comments below!
