Fall is the time when apple can really be the star of the show. We have an apple orchard nearby and we head there every October to pick bushels of apples. We always come home with WAY too many. We love to eat them raw, but we also need to find other ways to make use of them.

Who Doesn’t Love Cupcakes?
There is something about a cupcake that I just can’t resist. It is like its own little world of deliciousness. There are just so many different kinds and flavors of cupcakes and they all seem as unique as snowflakes. For this reason, there are so many different occasions that cupcakes are the perfect dessert. Cupcakes also travel well, are easy to share and are easy to eat. So, I’m always looking for cool, fun new cupcakes recipes and I’m so excited to show you these Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes with Buttercream Frosting!
Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes With Buttercream Frosting
These apple cupcakes have a nice hint of cinnamon mixed into the batter so that neither flavor is overpowering. The apple, mixed with the sour cream makes these cupcakes super moist and the buttercream frosting has a little more cinnamon mixed into it for a perfect treat full of Fall flavor!
Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes Ingredients
- Granulated sugar
- Butter, softened
- Vanilla extract
- Baking soda
- Pinch salt
- Sour cream
- Apple, peeled, cored and cut into small cubes
Buttercream Frosting Ingredients:
- Butter, softened
- Icing sugar
- Ground cinnamon
- Brown sugar
Can You Use A Different Kind of Frosting For Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes?
Well, we absolutely love buttercream frosting here and have no idea why you’d ever sub it out. But, yes, Cream Cheese Frosting would also taste pretty yummy on these apple cinnamon cupcakes. If your the type that really doesn’t like a lot of frosting on their cupcakes, you could also go with a simple sugar icing on top and maybe sprinkle some cinnamon sugar on top!
This recipe yields 12 cupcakes. If you need to make more, you can certainly double the ingredients. Or, you could also make these into mini cupcakes. This would be a great option if there are more people to feed or if you don’t like committing to a “whole” cupcake!
A Great Alternative Thanksgiving Dessert
Sure, we all love the Thanksgiving dessert staples such as pumpkin and apple pie. But isn’t it also fun to throw a bit of a curveball in there with some holiday desserts for Thanksgiving that aren’t quite so predictable? That is where these apple cinnamon cupcakes would be perfect!

Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes with Buttercream Frosting
Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 stick butter softened
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 cup a/p flour
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp baking soda
- Pinch salt
- ¼ cup sour cream
- 1 small apple peeled, cored and cut into small cubes
- 2 sticks butter softened
- 4 cups icing sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2-3 tbsp milk
- ½ tbsp brown sugar
Apple Cinnamon Cupcakes
Line a muffin tin with paper cupcake liners and set aside.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
In a large bowl, beat together sugar and eggs until creamy.
Add butter into sugar and egg mixture and beat some more. Add vanilla.
In a separate bowl, sift together all-purpose flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, baking soda and salt.
Add dry ingredients into wet ingredients one third at a time. Mix thoroughly.
Add sour cream and mix.
Add apple cubes and fold into batter.
Scoop about ¼ cup of batter into each muffin section.
Bake for 15-18 minutes. Allow to cool before decorating.
In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to beat together all ingredients. Start speed on low and gradually increase to high.
Once all ingredients are smooth and well-combined, the buttercream is ready.
Scoop buttercream into a piping bag with Wilton tip #12 attached.
Frost each cupcake generously and sprinkle with brown sugar.
Serve and enjoy!
