As a Comfort Food website, we LOVE Sweet Potatoes. We’ve made Sweet Potato Bites, Sweet Potato Casserole and even a Sweet Potato Salad. This tender, slightly sweet vegetable has an authentic, wholesome taste that works in so many different ways. It even tastes great mixed with other vegetables too!
But when you bake finely grated sweet potato with brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and more, you get something you really want to sink your teeth into! It’s really tough to describe this dish, it’s somewhere between a pudding, a cake and potato casserole.
If you serve it as is out of the oven, it’s a great side dish that would go with any savory meal like ham!
What Ingredients Will You Need For Sweet Potato Pone?
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup molasses
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon cloves
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 12-ounce can evaporated milk
- 4 sweet potatoes, peeled and grated
- Whipped cream and chopped pecans for garnish, optional

Sweet Potato Pone
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter softened
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup molasses
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon nutmeg
- ½ teaspoon cloves

- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 12- ounce can evaporated milk
- 4 sweet potatoes peeled and grated
- Whipped cream and chopped pecans for garnish optional
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9x13 baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
- Beat together the butter, brown sugar, and molasses until smooth.
- Add the ground cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt and mix to combine. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Add the evaporated milk and beat until mixed.
- Fold in the sweet potatoes.
- Spread the mixture in the prepared pan and bake in the oven for one hour, until the top of the casserole is golden brown.

Made this and it was absolutely horrible , way way too much butter. Followed recipe to the letter , I would suggest not shredding the potatoes but cooking them first ..( I baked them ) and mashing them and then add to the mixture .. tried it my way and reducing butter to just 4 tbls and using the remaining recipe ingredients it was wonderful , good warm flavor and texture then
