What Is Unicorn Toast?
Yep. Unicorn toast is a thing. I’ve heard that it really gained momentum on Instagram a couple of years ago. And now people currently post all sorts of cool pics of their fantastic toasty creations. So, what, exactly is Unicorn Toast? Generally, it is a piece of toast with colorful cream cheese on it.
But, from there, I have seen Unicorn Toast vary wildly fro one example to another. Some people color their cream cheese with food coloring and some use fruit, spices and seasonings to do this. After you color your cream cheese, there are a ton of different colorful toppings that you can put on it. This could be considered a breakfast food, a dessert or, depending on how you make it, even a healthy snack.
Easy Unicorn Toast Recipe
Here at Bubba Pie, we wanted to keep our recipe simple and tasty because that is what comfort food is all about. So we are just going to color our cream cheese with food coloring (we are going for fuschia and blue). We’ll top our Unicorn Toast Recipe with some coconut flakes and sprinkles. My daughter is going to love this!
Ingredients
- 4 pieces of toast, toasted
- 6 oz. cream cheese, softened
- Violet gel food coloring
- Yellow gel food coloring
- 8 tbsp sweetened coconut flakes
- 2 different colors of food coloring (your choice, we went for fuchsia and blue)
- Sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
- Divide your cream cheese in two bowls. Color one with 2 small drops of violet gel food coloring and the other with yellow gel food coloring. Mix each bowl of cream cheese until it is completely tinted.
- Place each colored cream cheese in its own piping bag and pipe out random lines on your toast.
- Using an offset spatula, spread the cream cheese to create a marbled look.
- Divide coconut flakes in two sandwich bags. Add 2-3 drops of fuchsia food coloring in one bag and blue in the other. Shake each back.
- Sprinkle your colored coconut flakes on each piece of toast. Top with sprinkles, if desired. Enjoy!
This Unicorn Toast would make a perfect surprise to treat to put in your kids lunchbox for school. They will be the hit of the lunchroom when they pull this out in front of their friends! Making these could also be a really fun kids activity as long as you are prepared to clean up a bit of a mess!
Again, this recipe is simply a jumping off point and I encourage you to improvise all you want. Feel free to put some fresh fruit on top! Or maybe drizzle some golden honey over them. You really can’t go wrong.
Yields 4 decorated pieces of toast.
