- GREAT FOR ANY OCCASION – This casserole goes GREAT with any smoked or BBQ meats. And it is also yummy in the colder months to go along with your Thanksgiving meal.
- EASY, MAKE AHEAD RECIPE – This dish takes just a handful of minutes to prepare. And you can also make it ahead of time and stick it in your fridge to take out when you are ready to bake.
Cabbage Casserole Ingredients
For The Casserole
- BUTTER – We used unsalted butter. To saute the cabbage and onions.
- CABBAGE – One head of cabbage. Coarsely chopped.
- ONION – We like using yellow onions for their sweeter, milder flavor.
- CREAM OF CHICKEN SOUP – You can also use Cream of Celery or Cream of Mushroom Soup if needed.
- SOUR CREAM – You can use low fat sour cream but it may alter the taste and consistency of this dish.
For the Topping:
- BUTTER – Melted
- CRACKERS – Crushed. Ritz Crackers are the best to use. But you can really use anything. Using bread crumbs would also work if that is all you have.
- SHREDDED CHEDDAR CHEESE – We recommend shredding your own cheese instead of buying the pre-shredded stuff. It melts better. But you can use any sort of cheese you’d like for this recipe.
- SALT AND PEPPER – To taste.
Cabbage Casserole Instructions

- Transfer the cooked cabbage to the prepared baking dish and season with salt and pepper.
- Stir together the cream of chicken soup and sour cream until well combined.
- Spread the mixture over the top of the cabbage.
- Combine the melted butter and Ritz crackers until well mixed. Stir in the shredded cheese.
- Sprinkle the cracker mixture over the top of the casserole.
- Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, until the topping is golden brown.
Storage, Leftovers and Freezing
Store leftovers in an airtight container in your refrigerator. They should be good for about 3 days. You can reheat in the microwave or in the oven for about 10 minutes at 350 degrees.
I wouldn’t freeze this dish because the creamy sauce won’t thaw well.
